Kyburg Castle towers 150 metres above the River Töss. It is the best-preserved feudal castle in north-eastern Switzerland.
It was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Kyburg, one of the most important noble families of the High Middle Ages. In 1264, it came into the possession of the Habsburgs, who sold it to the city of Zurich in 1424. Zurich’s bailiffs then resided at the castle until 1798.
