On the Swiss Way of St. James between Schwarzenburg and Fribourg, you come to Tafers. There is a chapel of St James in the cemetery. The chapel is beautifully painted on the outside with the story of the 'hanged man unhanged' legend, as well as with pictures of St. James the Elder and St. John. The creator of the paintings was the well-known Sensel painter Jakob Stoll (1731-1812).

A wicked innkeeper put a golden cup in the luggage of his guests, a father and son, who were on their way to Santiago, in order to accuse them of theft the next day. The son was then brought before the judge and hanged. The father continued his journey to Santiago and, when he arrived there, lamented his suffering to the saint. When he passed the gallows on his way back, he found his son alive. Saint James had saved him. The judge who was told the story was roasting a chicken and he would not believe the story and he said, "As little as these chickens, the hanged man can come back to life." No sooner had he said this than the chickens rose and flew away. Now the judge also believed the story. The son and father returned home safely, but the evil landlord was executed.
