The Romans were already using the hot thermal springs that rise here on the edge of the Black Forest. In the 19th century, Baden-Baden developed into a fashionable spa town thanks to its thermal baths. Lichtentaler Allee, the town's main promenade, runs along the Oos river and is lined with parks. The spa complex, built in 1824, also includes a casino modelled on the Palace of Versailles. The spa's drinking hall features a frescoed lobby and a mineral spring.
