The port city of Emden is located at the mouth of the Ems River where it flows into the North Sea in East Frisia. Emden is known for its Volkswagen factory and as the birthplace of Otto Waalkes.
The city, which has existed since the 8th century, was heavily destroyed during World War II. All that remains are a few bunker houses. Attempts have been made to adapt them to the cityscape.
Our ship, the Excellence Pearl, is moored in the harbour almost in the middle of the city. This is where our explorations begin.
