The Babenberg Duke Leopold IV founded a Dominican monastery in Wiener Neustadt in 1227. The Habsburg Emperor Frederick III converted it into a Cistercian monastery in 1444. Today, with its seven monks (as of August 2025), it belongs to the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz.

The Gothic Wiener Neustadt Altar once stood here. During the Baroque period, the new Baroque altar separated the choir from the church. The Gothic Marian altar, which Emperor Frederick donated to the monastery, was sold to the Vienna Cathedral Chapter in 1884 and placed in the left aisle of St. Stephen's Cathedral, not far from the emperor's tomb.
On the left-hand side is the tomb of Empress Eleonore. Originally, her husband Frederick III was also to be buried here. In fact, he was buried in St. Stephen's Cathedral.
