It rained during the night and as we leave our accommodation in Buchholz, the roads and paths are still wet.
Here we head west along the Elz towards Freiburg.
The first town we pass through is Denzlingen, a settlement at the end of the Glottertal valley that is over 1000 years old.
The Catholic parish church of St James in Denzlingen was built between 1975 and 1976. There is a large sculpture of St James on the outside wall of the church. The church got its patron saint's name because there is evidence of a ‘St Jakobskäppelin’ on this site around 1570.
The Protestant church in the centre of the village, dedicated to St. George, dates back to the Middle Ages. The tower with its striking spire was completed in 1547. Denzlingen became Protestant during the Reformation, in 1556 to be precise.
Denzlingen, old and new town hall
We leave Denzlingen on side roads.
We are making rapid progress on the flat.
Here we march to Freiburg.
After a long walk through the suburbs of Freiburg im Breisgau, you reach the centre with the cathedral.
