Originally, the Iglesia de Santa Maria del Naranco served as a summer palace for Naranco King Ramiro I (842-850) as a summer palace. Already in the 2nd half of the 9th century, the two-story building was transformed into a church. An staircase leads up to the former banqueting hall, the front sides of which are are framed by elegant loggias.
The basement, which resembles a crypt, was once the kitchen, bathrooms and rooms for servants.
