The island of Comino is located between the two larger Maltese islands of Malta to the south and Gozo to the north in the approximately six kilometre wide inlet Il-Fliegu ta' Ghawdex. The island is about three square kilometres in size and is a rocky plateau that rises between ten and twenty metres out of the sea. The coastline drops steeply almost everywhere and is interspersed with numerous caves.
We visited the island on an excursion boat. The ship anchored in the blue lagoon and we walked around the island a little. The most striking building on the island is the Santa Marija tower, a fortress built in 1618 under the rule of the Order of St John. The "Blue Lagoon" is a 120 metre wide strait between Comino and the rocky island of Cominotto to the west. The water here is crystal clear and turquoise in colour.
