On the summit of the Plainberg in the north of Salzburg stands the Maria Plain pilgrimage church.
The Maria Plain picture is at the centre of Marian devotion there

The miraculous image of Mary Consolation on the high altar.
This image was miraculously spared during the fire in the town of Regen (Lower Bavaria) during the Thirty Years' War.
After the image of the Virgin Mary was brought to Salzburg, Archbishop Guidobald Thun ordered the construction of a chapel in 1652. The church was built just 20 years later.
In 1751, the image of the Virgin Mary was crowned in accordance with a promise. The coronation mass composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was probably performed in 1779 as part of such a coronation celebration.
There is also a very beautiful copy of the Mariahilfbild in Maria Plain. It hangs in the right side altar - where the sacrificial candles are lit.
