Eierland Lighthouse
The red lighthouse at the northern tip of the island got its name from the former island of Eierland, which now belongs to Texel following land reclamation measures. It stands on a 20-metre-high dune.
Ecomare
We visited the Natural History Museum and Aquarium in the south of the village of De Koog. The museum provides an overview of the flora and fauna on Texel, the Wadden Sea and the ecology of the North Sea. One focus is on seals.
There is a bird and seal sanctuary. Here, oil-covered birds, young animals abandoned by their mothers (howlers) and seals in poor health are taken in. Around 25 of the mammals are nursed back to health each year and then released back into the wild. A permanent group of 20 seals that could no longer get used to life in the wild live here permanently.
Pictures of the island
There are thousands of geese and ducks on the island, lots of sheep, picturesque villages, many cycle paths and also lots of tourists.
