The castle of the same name and landmark of the town towers high above Landeck. It was built in the 13th century by the Counts of Tyrol. For centuries, it served as the provincial court and administrative centre. The castle experienced its heyday under the Knights of Schrofenstein. After a major fire, the building was completely renovated. Today it houses a museum and is open to visitors.
Landeck seen from the north. The tower of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary rises high. The church contains a beautiful Gothic altar, the "Schrofenstein Altar". The shrine and the figures in the predella date back to 1530 and depict the donor couple (Oswald von Schrofenstein and Praxedis von Wolkenstein) praying to St Oswald.
