Paul I, the son of Catherine II, had the Pavlovsk Palace built in the style of classicism. After his death, the palace became the residence of his widow, Maria Fedorovna. The architect was the Scotsman Charles Cameron. He built the palace near the Catherine Palace on a hill above the Slavyanka River.
